Under the patronage of the French National Commission for UNESCO, Mare Nostrum is a three‑year, multi-disciplinary program weaving together biodiversity monitoring, education, cultural diplomacy and long-term citizens’ action networks. Educating and empowering youths in the mediterranean region and beyond, the first two Mare Nostrum expeditions will take place September [EXACT DATE – EXACT DATE] & [EXACT DATE- EXACT DATE] in partnership with UNIMED, linking seven ports across six countries. Each anchorage is in close proximity to existing or proposed Marine Protected Areas (MPA) and we invite youths from across communities to participate in the various activities in each port.
For those students wishing to fully immerse themselves in the entire port-by-port program and to participate in the region’s first initiative of its kind, a full curriculum spanning field research methods, cultural diplomacy, ethical research principles, community-based knowledge exchange and sailing will take place onboard the Pelican of London — the Class A tall ship which carries the Guardians of GAIA facilitators as well as the intellectual and cultural beacon of the Mare Nostrum program through its journey from Tangier to Monaco and each port in between.
Port activities, locations and dates will be confirmed in spring of 2026. Attendance is open to all, completely free, but limited to venue and educators’ capacities, so we recommend signing up as soon as spaces are released.
